error thrown by synaptic. fix is reported for identical error in an earlier version, not sure if fix in this version, so reporting JIC.

Yup. Here's what I saw, in the course of upgrading with apt-get:

I don't see any calls to rm_conffile in /var/lib/ dpkg/info/ ttf-indic- fonts-core. * after installation, but that's probably because the installed version (as reported by "dpkg -l") remains at 1:0.5.4ubuntu2.
