VNC is available doing an 8.10 upgrade from 8.04

Solution to this problem:

sudo apt-get install xtightvncviewer

That package is a "plug-in" to the Terminal Server Client which adds VNC support.

Again, I suggested it before, please add xtightvncviewer to the list of suggested / recommended packages in the Terminal Server Client (TSClient) package so everyone at least has a CLUE how to get the VNC protocol support enabled.

Yes I realize that Remote Desktop Viewer is the "standard" for viewing remote VNC... but I happen to prefer TSClient for the task. This would reduce the time to figure out what was the magic package to add to enable VNC support.

It is NOT an "update" which solved this problem, it is the addition of a package which was not in the suggested list in the "tsclient" package. IT SHOULD BE LISTED AS A SUGGESTION! Otherwise people have no way of knowing why tsclient has the VNC protocol grayed out.

tsclient has been removed from the Ubuntu 11.10 archives. The software has not had a new release in years and was no longer being maintained. Unfortunately that means this bug won't be fixed.

More specifically, only a few bugs get fixed as Stable Release Updates (SRU). The SRU process requires that the bug be fixed first in the development first so that it is tested, but this app is not in the development release and it won't be coming back. I recommend you look for an alternative, such as remmina. Vinagre (which is already installed by default as Remote Desktop Viewer) should support VNC & RDP in Ubuntu 11.10. (Vinagre has already supported VNC for years.)

Thank you for the addl explanation. I am contently running 10.04 LTS.

I liked tsclient as it did not waste screen real estate when connecting to remote systems. Vinagre wastes a bit more space, but has the C-A-D capability which comes in handy on Windows hosts. I use them both.
