Bug Description

Binary package hint: transmission-daemon

The default username and password for transmission-daemon does not appear to be documented anywhere. It should be somewhere in /usr/share/doc/transmission-daemon, if nowhere else.

There is no default username and password.

If the user configures Transmission to require authentication but does not manually set a username and password, then no logins will be accepted.

Well, I certainly didn't set it to transmission/transmission manually.

I'm unable to reproduce this behavior.

The way I tested:

1. I mkdir'ed an empty test directory /tmp/transmission-test
2. Started transmission with "transmission-gtk -g /tmp/transmission-test" so that Transmission would be using the default settings
3. In Edit > Preferences > Web Client, I enabled the web client, enabled authentication, and disabled IP filtering
4. Loaded http://localhost:9091/ in a browser, causing me to be prompted for a username/password
5. Entered in transmission/transmission as user/pass

result: "401: Unauthorized"

Alex, could you try the same test and see what the results are in your end?

Just thinking aloud here -- *if* you've been using Transmission for awhile, maybe an older version set the defaults and that setting has persisted across upgrades. I don't remember ever having a default user/pass but I'm not 100% positive about that.

I tested with the following:
(on a fresh system)
1. apt-get install transmission-daemon
2. access http://localhost:9091/
3. Note that it prompts for a username and password.
4. enter transmission/transmission
5. access gained.

I didn’t have to make an empty test directory or change any settings or run transmission-gtk.

I am facing the same issue in my Ubuntu Server 12.04.1 64bit [transmission version: 2.51 (13280) ] and Raspbian Wheezy [transmission version:2.52 (13304)].
I do not use transmission in Ubuntu server, and noticed the same after facing the issue in raspbian, but on raspbian, I have previously always logged in with pi/raspberry without any problem.

This is also affecting transmission-daemon 2.92 on Ubuntu 18.04. The password is transmission/transmission yet it does not seem to be documented anywhere.
