Bug Description

Binary package hint: transmission

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x86_64
Transmission 1.92 (10363)

I don't like indicator-applet and disable it. Then in settings.json add that changes:

...
"show-notification-area-icon": 0,
"show-tray-icon": 1,
...

but after this, when run Transmission - it not displayed in tray.
how back normal tray icon for transmission, which used in Ubuntu 9.10?

Sorry for my English.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. This is a bug because Transmission has an option that says "Show Transmission icon in the notification area" which is checked, yet I get no icon in my notification area at all, presumably because I am not running indicator applet.

This behavior is caused by the nature of Ubuntu's AppInd patch to Transmission, which makes the icon an either-or decision made at compile time.

I'm happy for Transmission to support AppInd, but it would be better if the older icon system could be used as a fallback if AppInd isn't available at runtime.

Nobody on the Transmission development team is currently running Ubuntu. The AppInd patch was submitted by an Ubuntu volunteer (Sense Hofstede). Would it be possible for Sense, or another Ubuntu volunteer, to update the patch to address this ticket?

Subscribing Sense to the ticket. I have no idea whether he's interested in updating the patch or not, but he deserves first chance at it, and if not interested he might know who else would be interested in the patch. :)

does it help if transmission is started in a minimised state with the command

$transmission -m

This looks like the same problem I have, so instead of filing a new bug, I'll go under this one.

Ubuntu 12.10 with gnome-shell here.
In the screenshot attached, the notification area with Hydroxygen the icon theme I'm currently using. Transmission is the red X and shouldn't.

Almost every theme but ubuntu-mono-light and dark seems to fail at finding the icon for the notification area, but there is one in the theme folder in usr/share/icons.

I searched a way to see if i can point the icon to the theme, the system, or Transmission, but couldn't find any. Is there?
