The description and the crash report are plausible, though I don't yet see how it's occurring. the periodic_refresh() function is called by a timer while the properties dialog is open, and the timer is supposed to be cleared when the properties dialog is destroyed...

This is fixed upstream in 1.6x as a side-effect of the properties dialog rewrite:
