Bug Description

tracker 1.6.2-0ubuntu1.1 on 16.04 could be made to work for KDE/X/lightdm
- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769715#c12
- DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS has an incorrect value

on 16.10 it’s beyond repair:

dpkg --status tracker | egrep ^V
Version: 1.10.0-1ubuntu1

tracker reset hard && tracker daemon --start && tracker daemon --list-processes
Found process ID 23118 for 'tracker-extract'
Found process ID 23135 for 'tracker-store'
Found process ID 23145 for 'tracker-miner-user-guides'
Found process ID 23150 for 'tracker-miner-fs'
Found process ID 23155 for 'tracker-miner-apps'
- produces unhealthy tracker

A healthy tracker has one or two tracker entries
tracker daemon --start && tracker daemon --list-processes
Starting miners…

  ✓ File System
  ✓ Applications
  ✓ Extractor
Found 6 PIDs…
Found process ID 4185 for 'tracker-store'

Found process ID 4201 for 'tracker-miner-apps'
Found process ID 4207 for 'tracker-extract'
Found process ID 4229 for 'tracker'
Found process ID 4921 for 'tracker-miner-user-guides'

16/10/Unity 8 and 16.10/GNOME/Wayland are healthy, kde is not

On login tracker kind of works, but after a while the 'tracker' entry dies and tracker is no longer with us.

There are some new fancy race conditions, too:

on reset occasionally
(tracker daemon:13618): Tracker-CRITICAL **: Could not create proxy on the D-Bus session bus, Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Tracker1.Miner.Extract: Timeout was reached

on list processes occasionally:
Could not stat() file '/proc/21722', Error when getting information for file '/proc/21722': No such file or directoryFound 5 PIDs…

so the 'tracker' entries are created by follow or watch commands, so that’s not a problem

crawling, however, is broken

This is probably the race conditions mentioned paired with broken re-curse of bug 1644651
- possibly cause by dbus problems

Once that one is fixed, and someone is still on kde, it should be tested again

Just a blind guess, but does it help if you install dbus-user-session ?
