Similar problem in Xubuntu 14.04x64, Mint17x64 xfce and Mint17x32 xfce on Dell Vostro 5460. Unable to access Preferences, and connection of external mouse fails to disable the touchpad.
Also installation from PPA failed to add an entry to the autostart list. Fixed this by manually adding an entry to the autostart list for Touchpad-Indicator with the command /opt/extras. ubuntu. com/touchpad- indicator/ bin/touchpad- indicator (in Linux Mint 17x32 xfce).
