Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem-mozilla

In order to play BBC streams and certain other media formats on amd64, one _must_ use mozilla-mplayer.

Unfortunately, totem-mozilla BLOCKS mozilla-mplayer from being the default player in Firefox. This prevents streams such as .ra from being played properly through mozilla-mplayer.

Further, if you wish to remove the totem-mozilla virus, it seeks to remove the ubuntu-desktop package which is problematic to say the least.

Thanks for your bug. Being disrespectful with other people work will not make them listen to you, totem-mozilla is nowhere near of a "virus" like you call it. You are free to remove the ubuntu-desktop package too. Anyway that's a duplicate, marking it duplicate then

Apologies for the rather strong language. I am sure you can appreciate the impact of removing a plugin handler and having to reinstall your desktop though.

no problem, ubuntu-desktop is an empty package, you can remove without having to "reinstall your desktop"

It is a metapackage, no?

Try doing a sudo apt-get remove totem-mozilla and watch it attempt to remove your entire desktop:

---
aphorism@64bit:~$ sudo apt-get remove totem-mozilla
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  totem-mozilla ubuntu-desktop
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 106kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
---

If you accept, apt-get will carry on removing not only totem-mozilla, but also all of the packages bound to ubuntu-desktop.
