two things need to be done for Totem to work with the new sound menu
- registration using libinidicate
- support mpris2

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME .
Once submitted upstream , do report back here with the upstream bug number. Thanks in advance!

No, I don't see a bug report for this upstream, but I guess they won't do libindicate registration, maybe MPRIS2 support.

the libindicate registration is deprecated in the current version only mpris is required

Robert, you might want to report a new bug upstream to support MPRIS2 maybe

According to GNOMEs bugzilla totem supports MPRIS2.1 since 3.2. So this bug should be fixed in precise+1.

Btw: wouldn't it be better to just control the volume of all other non-musicplayer apps like in they're by the "applications"-tab in the sound-settings.
Maybe just move this feature to indicator-sound?

I don't like to play with bug reports, but this bug is still present in quantal 12.10.
It's still not clear where's the problem: upstream says totem already supports MPRIS2 (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640644#c3)

So, ubuntu :) what's your next move?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

My understanding is that MPRIS is enabled in Totem only by the "D-Bus Service" plugin. However, enabling this plugin doesn't seem to make any difference to the sound menu (on Precise, at least).
