Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I have libdvdcss installed, and have been able to watch a DVD for over an hour, when an error saying "The source seems encrypted, and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss?"

Why would it ask this question? It happened with only one or two DVDs I was watching, and the error came up at the same time each time it occured during the movie.

This must be a bug, because like I said, I already have libdvdcss installed.

Thanks for your bug report. I suppose you're using totem-xine - can you try with xine-ui too? Which version of totem is that?

Totem/edgy displays this error for just about any error in DVD playback, including files that don't exist (play dvd://idontexist) and read errors reported by the DVD drive.

This is totem-xine of course.

Can I confirm that it exists in Feisty?

I think this is caused by newer DRM methods like ARccOS. MPlayer is supposed to be able to handle that form of DRM. Do your DVDs work with MPlayer but not Totem-xine?

I have gotten this error message once (and it was a while ago)...I now use
Hardy (haven't played any DVDs yet, but if I get any errors, there will be a
separate bug report for it).

I guess this one can be closed due to its old age.

My comment above about dvd://idontexist does no longer apply to the hardy version. I don't know if read errors by the DVD drive still are reported as libdvdcss stuff.

If you don't find any part of this bug in Hardy, please just close it (or let it close itself automatically). Thanks for your time.
