Bug Description

Just installed flight 5, and by default goom is not used when playing an audio file, makes for playing that new example OGG a bit boring!

In addition its quite ugly as the window never gets redrawn and menus hang around underneath, etc!

If you select goom and restart totem its fine, so I figure its just a broken gconf schema.

I can confirm these problems. Personally I always switch off the visualization, so it's actually a good thing that it's not there by default.

And I also get the menus that never get redrawn problem. The totem window gets very ugly and crowded rapidly after pointing at a few menu items with the mouse cursor because of this bug.

Thanks for your bug. I'm not sure if effects should be activated by default. Does that works fine for everybody?

Daniel, what videosink do you use? Does changing it fixed the issue? What videodriver for xorg? The screen is refreshed correctly for me without using effects for that

FYI, my install was stock, would have been using Xvideo.

As for the effects - why not enable them? does it really hurt?

It uses some CPU, it's distracting, not something I would expect when I want to listen to a song. That should probably be discussed on the desktop list or could use a pool on the fridge or launchpad by example

Just installed flight#6 and the menu redraw problem showed up - but on a restart all was fine. I had also selected goom so I don't know if that interacted in someway as the restart was just grand. I ran totem directly from the kalimoto sample song.

Interestingly, on first start, the backdrop is an odd red colour but on restart it was black (goom I suspect, but upon disabling, the black backdrop remains on restart). However I think the problem might be related to the "visual effects" switch? The "type of visualisation" has only one option (goom) yet it initially shows as blank, which is not a possible option. I think it should be showing goom, but the "visual effects" switch should unchecked (disabling goom - I can't specifically remember if it was like that to begin with, but I do think it was actually checked).

I have a screenshot of the menu problem & red background.

My video setup is the default one at time of testing, as I have an nVidia card.

I can confirm the no-redrawing problem. Apparently it is caused by the fact that when you first open totem, the "Show visual effects" setting is on but the "type of visualisation" field is blank. Setting the type of visualisation field or disabling visual effects makes the problem go away.
So I guess the problem is with the default configuration.
BTW, I don't think that this bug's severity should be "wishlist".

There are 2 bugs blended together in this report. The wishlist is for the fact that there is no visualisation set by default (i.e the problem expressed by the title of this report)

As for the no-redrawing problem, it is covered in more detail in bug 34578.

In fact the default gconf key is set to "goom" but totem-gstreamer uses "GOOM: what a GOOM!" for it so it doesn't match
