Have used both Totem & VLC players before without experiencing any problems. BUT... having downloaded Ubuntu Intrepid, neither player works:they only throw up garbage/video noise etc. And the new versions of both players have a very limited function features .. What is theproblem? VLC works perfectly on my desktop, with Windows ...

Worked fine in Ubuntu 8.04? I find 8.10 seems a lot less stable than 8.04, i'd recommend getting 8.04 instead but then i'm just a noob really.

Err, im using 8.10 with Totem 2.24.3 without the troubles you describe. I changed my gstreamer-properties video output to '... (no Xv)' because the ati drivers aren't completely sorted out yet. Ati didn't want non-microsoft users using their products for some reason but finally relented quite recently.

Features?!?!?! lol, did a linux media-player have features? I'm putting up with a lack of features because i find Linux so much easier to work with and such a refreshing break after years of agro using microsoft 'systems'. I'm learning a lot but still a noob really.

oh, check Bug #137527 if you're having trouble with commercially bought dvd's, there's a handy how-to type fix there.
