If it's an encrypted DVD (most store-bought DVDs are), do you have libdvdcss2 from medibuntu.org installed? Yep, makes perfect sense. The xine backend has traditionally had better DVD support (I use it for that reason). For that reason, I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate. I'm looking for the master bug.
