Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Hardy (downloaded from "Current" on 15th Feb)

Problem: Nautilus and Desktop right-click links do not open totem correctly to play a DVD movie.

Steps to reproduce problem:

- Install DVD stuff from medibuntu or equivalent (if you don't already have it)
- Insert commercial DVD movie
- Icon appears on desktop, right-click, choose option [Open with "Movie Player"]
OR
- Double-click the DVD icon, and nautilus will open to the DVD drive root, with a notification bar that says: "These files are on a Video DVD." and click the Open Movie Player button.

- Totem loads up and fails, sometimes with an error message, sometimes not
- Totem's playlist shows cdrom0

To play movie correctly:

- Insert DVD
- Open Totem from Applications menu
- IN TOTEM choose from the menu Movie > Play Disc 'DISC NAME'
- DVD starts correctly.

Thank you for your bug. Your description is confusing. Does it start playing listing cdrom0 in the playlist or does it fail as your title suggests?

it attempts to play, but shows a corrupted display in the video window, and cdrom0 in the playlist...

The progress bar doesn't go forward, and the corrupted display doesn't change.. however, the application does not hang, you can still "Stop" and open new file, or close, or whatever.

If you start up totem by the main Applications menu, and choose Play Disc 'DISC NAME' from in totem... then play-list does not show cdrom0 (it shows a random VOB number like "2" or whatever), and the playback starts normally.

This is with a commercial DVD.. I have also tried some other commerical DVDs with similar results... the corrupted display might be slightly different, or you may receive an error, but cdrom0 will show in the playlist, and it doesn't work correctly as it does when you start it from within totem.

I have attached a screen shot (with the DVD "Sayonara")
in the ss is what happens when you click Open Movie Player

As a comparison, this is what should happen, when you choose Movie > Play Disc 'DISC NAME' from the menu after starting totem from Applications.

Just a side note: I just noticed that after chooseing Movie > Play Disc 'DISC NAME' from the menu, it disappears from the menu... you have to restart totem to get it to appear on the menu again.

thanks for your time.

On some DVDs it works anyway, but the key thing is totem behaves differently for no good reason, and sometimes it doesn't work.

i have a (probably) related bug here on latest hardy i386. if totem autostarts my DVD it loops/gets stuck while playing what seems to be the first .vob file. If i choose Play Disc XY form the Movie menu it starts playing correctly displaying entries 2 3 4 5 in the playlist.

This is an unencrypted disc. dvddecss or anything is not installed. just a plain hardy install.
