Bug Description

this bug is reproducible every time. I just need to open an mp4 video file with a subtitle file in the same folder. then the subtitle shows and the video plays ok. then if I try to disable the subtitle, totem freezes, and I have to close it by force.

Only mp4 files? I thought it would happen on any format.
It seems to freeze when I disable subtitles.

curiously, it does not happen with mkv format.

It would happen with MKV, too.
Changing subtile seems to be OK. When I turn off subtitle, it would happen.
I hope someone fix it ASAP. Because totem shows wrong subtitles (probably the former subtitles), I want to turn it off but totem freeze everytime.

apparently it has been there forever, and apparently nobody wants or cares to fix it. this is a redhat report from 2007:

as a workaround, I made vlc the main video player for now. but I prefer to have totem.

This happens on mkv files as well for me.

Same here. mkv and mp4.
Turning them off prior to starting the movie works, but trying once the movie is playing causes it to hang every time.

the fact that such a bug is still unassigned bothers me to no end. I've switched to vlc for now, since totem is completely unusable for me.

I got the same thing in the latest 14.04 build this weekend; apparently it is not getting any attention.

switched to xubuntu 14.04, so probably won't see it again! :P

Running Linux Mint 16 Petra Cinnamon, same problem here. Just realized that it freezes when you try to switch off subtitles from the context menu (right click on movie screen) but not from the view menu on the toolbar. Also doesn't freeze when you switch from one to another subtitle. Hope it helps.

Same distribution as Eduardo, but it also happens via the view menu as well.

Having to use VLC for any files with automatically loaded/unwanted subtitles... far from ideal. Looks like totem don't use launchpad so they'll likely not notice any of this, and clearly they don't care; 7 years later and still a bug.

It's worse on my Ubuntu-Studio (Xubuntu with rt kernel) Trusty (14.04) : not only it freezes whenever you try to change subs, but it makes Xfce hangs and restart (when lucky and stable) if you try to kill totem/answer yes to the dialog box to force-close it...!
