Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I was steaming video which was reportedly Xvid ffmpeg from a samba file share and at random times would freeze in a loop nothing responds(this ended up being my laptop overheating).

so disregard the above the real problem is in watching movies on a compiz or berylised desktop (openGL).

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Does it happen with any video?

How do you know it's doing a loop and not blocking? Could you try to obtain a backtrace http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash when hanging and attach the file to the bug report?

OK I'm changing this because in actual fact my laptop was just overheating.
however there is still a bug where video stops, audio continues and eventually video returns.
turn off compiz or beryl and all works without err.

Sounds like your laptop isn't fast enough to do video and compiz at the same time.

well I tested cpu monitoring with movie but average is 10 - 30%. At random intervals video drop-outs occur with 50-100% cpu utilisation, sudden and flat.

Turion x2 1.6 GHz TL-52, geforce 6150 integrated graphics.

could be the nvidia driver ... wouldn't surprise me ... turned off sync to VBlank in compiz, beryl & nvidia-config

further testing has lead me to the conclusion that this also happens at idle too so doesn't really implicate totem
