I am heaving exactly the same problem since about Gutsy. Now I'm using Intrepid (Gnome) and nothing changed. I've already tried players like Totem, Kaffeine and Vlc without success. I'm also using ndiswrapper for my netgear wlan pci card, maybe it has something to do with that?
