It happened to me too yesterday morning (I had to reboot) and now again this morning, no idea what changed. Thunderbird 17.0.5 (but on fedora 18).

Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) reached end-of-life on May 12, 2011.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported in a currently supported version of Ubuntu?
