Bug Description
Not sure if this is a Unity or Thunderbird bug, but when I read email (and therefore changing them from "unread" to "read" and then look at the thunderbird application icon (in alt-tab or in the unity launcher), the number does not seem to decrease correctly.

Hi,
The count doesn't display unread messages, but rather "new" messages, which is the same as the messaging indicator. A message is only considered new if it was delivered since you last navigated in a particular message folder.
If the count on the launcher is the sum of the counts in the messaging menu, then it's working as intended.
We don't display unread count because it generally isn't interesting for most people, and results in the launcher showing a permanent count until you have zero unread e-mail
