You can disable extension compatibility checking and most extensions will run. Binary extensions like Lightning or Enigmail aren't so lucky.

However, I thought your big issue was a hang after wakeup from sleep, not a hang on shutdown. This patch has no effect on the former, but there's work going on in Bug 508263 that may help with that. (Sorry, all these bugs are dirty, in that they conflate a bunch of issues)
