Thunderbird 3.0.4: the links in "preferences" don't get through

everything is in the title: I'm running Thunderbird 3.0.4 on Lucid updated April 20, kernel 2.6.32-21

this happened in 2 cases

1- Edition > properties (this is an approximate translation of the French version !)
I get a "preferences" window
3rd tab "redaction" in French, could be "writting" in English
basic language is English, but when I click on "download other dictionaries", nothing happens

2- also with : tools > extra modules > catalogue
when i click on "browse for extra modules", nothing happens

Even though
I initiated : System > preferences > preferred applications > to: Firefox and Thunderbird
and in config editor : network.protocol-handler.app.http > to: /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/firefox

This may be related to bug #543064 (ensure that x-www-browser is used if
no http handler is found through gnome integration). Unfortunately,
that bug has been deferred until Ubuntu 10.10.

The additional issue with regard to missing dictionary files was fixed
in the 3.0.4+nobinonly-0ubuntu4 Thunderbird update, which closed bug #
509248. You should now have access to a French dictionary if you have
the myspell-fr or myspell-fr-gut packages installed.
