Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Whatever the unknown mime type an attachement has, Thunderbird should provide an application selector in order to:
1. open the attachement for this time
2. teach Thunderbird what it will use the next time for opening the attachement.

This happens to me with MP4 attachments (see hopefully relevant part of the raw email included below.) I only get the option to save the attachment to disk, but I can't open it from within TB. (This has been working just fine in TB 2.x.)

In Preferences -> Attachments, there are five pre-defined content types (DOC, http, PDF, TIFF, XLS), but there doesn't seem to be a way to add additional types.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
  boundary="=_kow29Sia40SwsAG"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

--=_kow29Sia40SwsAG
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="FOO.mp4"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="FOO.mp4"

Should this be merely of "Wishlist" importance? After all, this is a regression from TB 2.x.

I agree this is more than "Wishlist". What it needs is a properly-configured default mimeTypes.rdf file for a start, plus a way to add additional types without having to hand-edit the mimetypes.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner.

If this is still an issue using a currently supported version of Thunderbird then please let us know otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.
