Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird-gnome-support

The package thunderbird-gnome-support should provide GNOME integration for Thunderbird. However, this package does not deliver the desired software as it contains only documentation files:

I found this now also. The menus in thunderbird are not integrated (or ugly) with gnome and I installed this package to see if something happen differently then I found that the package is... empty?!!

I also hoped that this package would solve my problem. I cannot directly access network shares but have to use ~/.gvfs/ to add or save an attachment on a samba share.

Does anyone know if this is a thunderbird bug or an Ubuntu bug? Even though quite a lot of people seem to have this problem noone has come up with a solution yet.

This has been an issue forever. I hoped that with the release of thunderbird 3 gvfs support would be available. Yesterday I was checking Claws Mail and it supports gvfs!!! So, the best looking, best imap-supporting, and best featured email application for Linux just sucks because it does not integrate well with the desktop environment. No wonder how Evolution is the default email client in Ubuntu.

I would like to see these improvements as well, but I think this bug should have the Importance updated to be something like "Wishlist". The current thunderbird-gnome-support package doesn't doesn't attempt to use GVFS, etc, making it an enhancement rather than a bug.

Hello Dominik,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2009 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 408583

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.

G

The bug still exists, and has for the last 9 years.

If you had read the bug description, you would have find out that everything you posted is irrelevant. Simply look at any of the file listings of the package, e.g. https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/amd64/thunderbird-gnome-support/filelist .

Why should I generate any sort of collected report when the bug is that the package in fact contains only two text files instead of the real content of the package?

Also, I cannot generate such a report as I have long moved away from Ubuntu - among other shortcomings due to such awkward bugs noone cares about.

Thanks for the feedback, Dominik. Sorry about that. I was using the standard bug report response for old tickets. Thanks for updating the ticket status.
Take care and have a great day.

thunderbird-gnome-support has dependencies which are currently:

apt depends thunderbird-gnome-support
thunderbird-gnome-support
  Depends: thunderbird (= 1:68.2.2+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1)
  Depends: libmessaging-menu0
  Depends: libunity9
 |Depends: libnotify4
  Depends: <libnotify1>

Is anything else needed to provide the required level of functionality in a GNOME environment?
