Bug Description

The Thunderbird icon on the dock shows the count of new mails correctly, but the icon does not update itself once the emails have been read. Even restarting the app will not update the icon.

I would expect the notification icon to show zero (new emails) once the mails have been read.

Having the same issue I do want to add that I wonder if this is actually a Thunderbird issue or perhaps a Ubuntu one. I'm seeing the same behavior on another app as well since upgrading to 23.04. In my case the electron based chat client Ferdium.

The number icon (not just for Thunderbird) is counting the notifications of the main notification window of Ubuntu (under the date at the top bar ) and not the actual unread emails.

So even after reading an email, as the notification still exists in the main notification window, the number icon will not update.

If we remove/clear/click the notification in the main notification window, it will update the number icon (even if the email is still unread in Thunderbird)

It seems to be true, I removed Thunderbird notifications and the number in the icon went down.

However that's completely unhelpful given that the number of notifications has no relevance to anything (as in I can't imagine why would one want to know that). Not sure if there are other programs where it could be useful (can't think of any) but for any email, messaging etc. program it's just misleading. Is this a recent change?

Thanks for help! I was struggling with this fantom badge numbers for months. Now I see that it's more like Gnome problem. I agree, unread system notifications should not influnce on badge number. In MacOS and in Windows the application itself decides what number should be on badge, not the OS notification system
