Thunderbird locks with a black option New Window ..Quit

Thunderbird is in favourites and when there are multiple entries on thunderbird the option to open with a New Window, Compose New Message, Contact, Remove from Favorites and Quit locks

This covers other favourites at the top of the list

It happens repeatedly

I tried various kill options from a terminal and that was not successful in clearing the problem

I am running 21.10 including the included version of Thunderbird

The problem has not occurred with any other program - hence I am thinking it is a thunderbird - gnome gui interaction
