Thunderbird crashes on startup if Wayland enabled

After normal system upgrade thunderbird (1.78) start results in a window:

We're Sorry
Thunderbird had a problem and crashed.
...

Removing current user profile ~/.thunderbird does not solve the problem.

Starting on console gives:

Thunderbird starts as desired when I disable Wayland (file /etc/gdm3/custom.conf -> WaylandEnable=false)
