Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu 7.10
When the Edit - Preferences window is opened, it is not big enough to fit everything. This has been the case for a long time, but I couldn't find a bug here about it.

Finally got a screenshot for this... I know I have resized this in the past, but it's back to being too short.

I can confirm this for firefox (3 beta 3). See attached screenshot, the width of the preferences window is to small.

But I just installed thunderbird (2.0.0.12) and there everything is fine. The preferences window is higher than that from the screenshot of Nattgew.
Nattgew, maybe you could clarify: What version of thunderbird are you using? Are you sure that you haven't resized it (made too small) manually at some point?

Btw, I am using an up-to-date version of hardy alpha 5, which was not dist-upgraded but freshly installed. I just installed thunderbird the first time, so there is not chance of old config-files lying around with a user-defined height...

OK, forget my comment about thunderbird from above.
I just found out the following:
There are different "tabs" (No real tabs, but similar), with "General", "Display", "Composition" and so on.
Now when you select one tab and close the preferences window, thunderbird remembers that and shows the same tab, when you open the preferences-windows again, however, it resizes it so fit the current "tab".
That means:
If you left it at a big tab (actually I mean a tab that has much content, therefore is high) the last time like "General" or "Composition" everything is fine when you open the preferences-window and switch to other tabs.
However, when you have left it at a small tab, like "Privacy" or "Attachments" the last time and then open the preferences window and switch to a big tab, the window is to small to show the whole content.
Nattgew: Can you confirm?

So everything boils down to this: When the preferences-window is opened, it should resize to fit the biggest one of the "tabs", not the currently showing one.

What I just wrote applies to thunderbird only, for firefox the width seems to be static but too small.

Yes, I get the same thing.
In Firefox 3, the problem seems fixed... if I resize the window too small, and then switch "tabs," it immediately sets it back to the proper size.

Nope, the problem with firefox (3 beta 4) is still existent on my up-to-date installation of hardy beta.
In the "advanced tab", the button Check Now is still not completely visible.

Nattgew:
Furthermore, if I resize the preferences window manually and switch "tabs", the window size does not change at all... Does it really work for you?

So setting status for firefox-3.0 back to confirmed.

I looked again, and I realized that while the window no fixes its size vertically, it doesn't fix itself horizontally. If the button is cut off on the bottom, it will redraw to fit. If it is cut off on the right, it will remain cut off.
Is this what you mean? If so, I agree with you, and I'll change the bug to "too narrow."

The same problem occurred with Thunderbird (2.0.0.14) on Vista Home Basic.
Parts of the Account Settings window is not visible, plus it is not resizable.

The problems over OS-es might be related.
(Although there is no such problem on the same machine with Ubuntu)

By the way is there a way to access the non-visible fields and buttons?
I would like to change my local folder - but the button for it is not visible
(and the field is not editable).

I just re-tested and in firefox3beta5 in my installation of hardy, the bug does not occur anymore. You can resize the references-window both horizontally and vertically as you like but after closing and re-opening the window the width and height are fine again.

Can anyone confirm?

I can confirm that it is fixed in RC1. You can make it too short, but as soon as you change a tab or close and then open it, it resizes to what it should be.

Where did you get RC1 from? Mozilla upstream builds or Ubuntu Mozilla
Teams PPA well its fta's PPA? if you tested with upstream build that
doesnt mean its fixed it maybe caused by something we changed or added.

What version of Thunderbird is this still an issue on? 1.5? 2.0.0.x?
replace x with a 2 digit number

be hitting repos soon.It was uploaded to intrepid but we are waiting for
deps to be uploaded before it can be built and pushed. We should have
RC1 in hardy shortly im not sure if they were uploaded yet since left

You say that this issue isnt present in thunderbird 2.0.0.12. Now it is
present in 2.0.0.14 or was this a misstatement? I will attach my
screenshot of Tb2 pref. window can you please tell me what it is that is
not shown that should be?

John, sorry for the confusion, I meant my comment after the one you quoted.
The issue is indeed still present in thunderbird 2.0.0.14.

The issue is the following (steps to reproduce):
1.) Open preferences and switch to a "tab" which content is not high like "Privacy" or "Atachments"
2.) Close preferences and re-open it again, see that it opens showing the same tab you switched to earlier but with resized height (in this case: decreased height).
3.) Now switch to a different "tab" and see that the height of the window is not high enough to show all the contents of the other "tab"

How to select/access invisible parts in Thunderbird (Firefox) when window is cut off!

If this issue is still relevant to anybody...while I haven`t found a bug fix, the easiest way to access non visible parts in Thunderbird Account Settings etc. is using your PC`s TAB key...click on the uppermost visible part in the settings window, then start pressing the TAB key and it will either highlight or dotframe selected settings in succession...if the next visible part is not highlighted or dotframed, then you know you have hit an invisible setting, press Enter...and there you go.

One way is to resize your window till it fits. If your screen is too
small you can use Alt+F7 and then the cursor keys to move the window.
