I had a problem much like this.

- in 2020 January.

- Ubuntu 18.04

- broke when I updated Thunderbird from 1:52.7.0+build1-0ubuntu1

- fixed when I rolled it back and pinned it.

With recent updates, even 1:52.7.0+build1-0ubuntu1 failed in a way that seems the same.

I then updated to the latest version and it still fails.

I have a POP server on my LAN. Thunderbird accesses it using TLS.

tcpdump shows that Thunderbird opens a TCP/IP connection and does nothing with it.

I seem to remember (from 2020 January) that someone said that the bug is actually in a library. Unfortunately I don't remember which one. ldd applied to thunderbird doesn't show any likely candidates.

Oops:

The problem has gone away. I'm not sure why. Things that I did:

- updated thunderbird (that didn't fix the problem by itself -- I did that before posting #2)

- did a software update on the server (Fedora 32). But that doesn't explain the problem since the problem arose WITHOUT a software update on the server.

- rebooted the server and the UBUNTU box. That didn't fix the problem by itself since I had rebooted them before without the problem going away.

Summary: mystery. But I'm content.

False alarm. Sorry.

@mpaq: sorry for the lack of feedback when you originally reported the problem. Are you still seeing it with the latest thunderbird update on a supported release of Ubuntu?
