Another thing: when I mark a message like junk, Thunderbird does not move it to the junk folder, and it is configured to do so...

Confirming on Gutsy with all updates (both with automarking of Junk and manual marking of Junk, as noted by lapega above).

Had the same problem. It was somewhat 'solved' by setting the junk filtering options that are under 'Account settings'. When I set these too, instead of just the global settings, the junk messages were correctly moved to the junk folder, behaviour as expected. I feel this is more of a workaround than correct behaviour of Thunderbird, but still.

Thank you Roelof ...

I agree that this still isn't an ideal solution, but I've been pulling my hair out over this, so anything which gets it working again is good news to me.

Much appreciated ...

This works here with POP and IMAP i just adjust settings in account
preferences under junk mail to send junk to junk folder in <email address hidden>
Can you please post your settings in JUnk Mail section of account
settings without giving any personal info.

I'm getting this same bug, in Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 in Kubuntu 8.04.1.

The workaround suggested by Roelof did not work for me either.

Same bug for me in unbuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

Everything works except the movement to the spam folder.
message is marked spam, and marked read (as configged in preferences)
but not moves the message to spam box while that one is checked asswell
as in preferences as for each email-account i have. Simply does not work.

Ok ... good news... i have a fix that can be done in Thunderbird himself.

Go to your email accounts, and for EACH account be sure that the move to spambox is checked,
but do not check the first round checkbox, but the other named "other", even if that rule moves
tot he same spam box as the first option.

If that is done the movement works again. So this is a bug for sure, but it came into my mind it
could be a translation problem also, cause normally the map is called junk, but on the dutch version
that map is translated to "Ongewenst". So i think that the first option tries to move the mail to
the junk folder which does not exists when you use another language.

At the other hand it's a big shame for the developers of thunderbird, cause the first bug-report
is already dated from the 22th october LAST year, and hence it's still not fixed. So i seriously
start wondering why there is a bug tracker in the first place if nobody gives a damn about the bug ?

No wonder that so much people try linux and return back to windows. No matter how unsecure or
unstable windows can/might be... at least that piece of software actually WORKS. And it even gets
worser, cause even the windows version of thunderbird seems to have the same bug.

Fellow developers... keep this tip in mind... if you can't reproduce the bug, doesn't mean it's not there !

i have specified that junk mail should be moved to my Junk folder. when new messages are loaded into my Inbox (IMAP) and identified as junk, they remain in the Inbox rather than being moved. messages that are manually identified as Junk are automatically moved to the Junk folder. (this used to work.)

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
all messages identified as junk should be moved to the Junk folder.

Thank you, Bieleke. I also noticed that I had a junk folder in two accounts. I do not think it is necessary to keep a junk folder for my gmail account, because in gmail there is an spam label, not junk label, so I deleted that one. It works that way for me, too, even selecting then the first radio button.

Hi!

This is the same bug on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/155759 , is a multi-platform issue. I copy&paste the hotfix mentioned there in comment #13:

Go to your email accounts, and for EACH account be sure that the move to spambox is checked,
but do not check the first round checkbox, but the other named "other", even if that rule moves
tot he same spam box as the first option.

If this also doesnt work in Windows version please file a bug with mozilla, make sure to mention that it can be a translation problem. drop the link to the bug you file with mozilla to this bug.
Now we need to reproduce it to fix it. I'm using English locales, please try using Engliah and see if you can reproduce it than. Try this before filing the bug upstream.
Most of the time people see bugs because of their settings, this is the reason we need to reproduce this. It sounds liike the translation isnt in the settings tabs from what has been said in this bug.

Can you change the word Junk to whatever the name is in folders. (Ongewenst)

Ok someone said they had spamassain, I'm sorry but spamassin doesnt work with thunderbird. at least in Linux versions.
someone also said that they dont need a spam/junk folder because gmail has its own. dont count on gmail catching them a few weeks ago gmail was down do to a server problem and it shut everyone down for a few hours.
I have 9 Gmail accounts and they do not filter all spam, so dont count on it working.
If you see this on Gutsy please update to Hardy Intrepid or Jaunty Gutsy is no longer supported.

For me, I had to do this to get it fixed:

1. Edit->Preference->Privacy->Junk
--> check "When I mark messages as junk:"
--> select "Move them to the account's "Junk" folder
--> check "Mark messages determined to be Junk as read"

2. Edit->Account Settings->Local Folders->Junk Settings
--> check "Move new junk messages to:"
--> check "Junk" folder on "Local Folders"
--> each individual account's Junk Settings are left unchecked

Now hitting J to mark junk automatically moves the selected message to the account's Junk folder, even if the account doesn't store its mails in Global Inbox.

Thanks to comment #19 (above), I seemed to have fixed things by setting junk preferences globally. I had already enabled junk filtering by account.

Apparently junk filtering must be enabled at *both* the global and the account level for it to work at all. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but the wording of the panels should be changed to reflect this. (Those panels would be "Account Settings/Junk Settings" and "Preferences/Privacy/Junk".)
