Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. I've added a task here for the translations team so that we can resolve this in a more global fashion. Please report any other issues you may find.

@Ubuntu Translators
language-support-translations-en was removed as a source after Jaunty, but there doesn't seem to be a transitional package for it to whatever replaced it in Lucid. Therefore, this user is stuck with old dependencies. Thanks.

The language-support-translations-* meta packages have been removed
altogether, since that functionality is now handled by the installer and
language-selector directly (and will be handled by software-center soon,
too hopefully). Language-selector will now install thunderbird locales
for the installed languages only if thunderbird is already installed or
is marked to be installed.
Therefor there is no transitional package.

Solution: just remove the language-support-translations-* packages and
run language-selector again. This should pull all necessary translation
packages again.

I found it still happens in Ubuntu 11.10 with Thunderbird 8.0. The workaround is easy, disabling of GB language pack and manual installation of US English language pack addon.

Is this really low priority, its going to be two years pretty soon from the date it was filed?

Hello Daniele,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2010 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 525866

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
