Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunar

Inserting any of my 3 usbsticks while loggedin as regular user will not cause them to show in thunars the sidepane, no directories in /media are created upon insertion.
Worked just fine before I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04.

Mounting /dev/sdb1 on the command line shows the sticks work fine, the sticks do continue to show up in thunar / automount fine in my other (not yet upgraded) 8.04 and 9.04 systems.
I can see per dmesg and in /dev that the block devices for the usbstick get created
(and have correct permissions), the hald-addon-storage process shows up and says its polling /dev/sdb every 2 seconds.
I tried with volume management / automounting either on or off in thunar, same result.

But when I start thunar as root (sudo thunar) the usbsticks *DO* show up in the sidepane and even get automounted fine with volume management set up accordingly in thunar.

I'd appreciate any hints to debug this further.

Michael

Thank you for reporting this issue. Are you using auto-login? Could you take a look at bug 546992 and see if any of the proposed workarounds work for you?

Please attach your ~/.xsession-errors file to this report after plugging in the usb stick.

Yes,
I do use autologin and its seems to be the root cause just like 546992.

Loggin out & in again makes it workfine, turning autologin off makes it work right on the first login.
.xsession-errors attached.
I also looked at the .xsession when turning off autologin (i.e. when it works fine), the only difference is the timestamps and the name file in /tmp the GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL variable points to.
In neither case does the plugging of the usb stick itslf create any extra messages in the .xsession-errors file.

I encountered the same issue, i.e. usb not being detected upon insertion. I tested autologin both on and off and there was no difference. Still no detection. I read something about thunar. I checked Synaptics Package Manager and found thunar was not installed. I installed it and rebooted. No change. I then turned off the system, inserted the usb flash drive (sandisk 4gb) and proceeded to boot. The flash drive lit up several times during the process. I then signed in under my user name and the flash drive was displayed on the desktop. I was able to successfully access data on the drive. I further tested to see if I could remove the flash drive and reinsert it. It displayed just as before. I then removed it and inserted another flash drive (sandisk 2gb) and it too was detected. For my final test, I turned off the laptop and turned it back on, signed in and then reinserted one of the two flash drives. It was not detected. So, it appears that if the system is started with the drive inserted into the usb port, it is detected. I'm happy that I have found my workaround. I hope this helps others as well. Now i have no idea if installing the missing thunar via Synaptics Package Manager helped, but I'm not about to change it as of this writing.

I seemed to have the same problem. What seems to have fixed it for me was playing with the boot order in bios. I moved USB to be last in the boot order, rebooted, and I still couldn't get any automounting of my USB pen drives. Then I moved USB back to being after the CDROM and before the HD as I'd had it before, rebooted and it worked as if nothing was ever wrong.

Also worth saying is i disabled the floppy boot option in bios and moved it to be after the HD, but that action by itself didn't make a difference. It was only when I took the action above that it worked again.
