Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunar

I use Xubuntu 7.10 amd64.
I have few ntfs partitions and Raid1 ext3 mounted on Root.
I turned on viewing of hidden files in Thunar and look at files in detailed view.

When I open Thunar and work with files, everything is fine.
But when I open another Thunar window, and click to browse some files, It freezes itself
and hard disk activity is huge. And also cpu activity is 100%.
I can click inside Thunar window but when I click on the left panel to browse files,
it is showing just: Loading... and nothing happens..
Sometimes after openin another window, it just freezes and I need to kiil it from Terminal.
Sometimes, before I managed how to kill it, I used to request mor windows to open with no result.
But when i kill gam_server, All windows I tried to open previously opens..
Newest behavior is that i see 100% cpu use in System Load Monitor on xfce-panel
BUT "top" command does not show high cpu use.
I can now open multiple Thunar windows taht just do nothing but showing : Loading and loads nothing.
After few "kills" of gam_server and thunar, Thunar is just showing as <defunct> and all windows freezes.
Windows manager "close" bitton does not respond and when I use Ctrl+Alt+Escape and click on Thunar
window, windows disappear but <defunct> process stays.
Now again when I try to open Thunar, it opens another process and cursor is waiting for it start and it never start.
When I kill new Thunar process, Desktop is back again but <defunct> Thunar process stays.
I cannot kill -9 thunar nor gam_server processes eather.

Beacouse of this bug(s), I simply cannot use Thunar and Xubuntu for everyday tasks..
It seems that Thunar in (X)ubunutu is totally useless as file manager and makes question
of even using (X)ubuntu as an OS..

Thank you for your bug report. We will investigate this, I'm setting this to High priority.

I just want to correct your last sentence: it may be useless for you, but it's still an OS and it's working OK for other people. I can understand that you are annoyed by this situation but it's not necessary to say that evrything is just crap.

Lionel: Do you have any ideas on this ?

Sorry but we need more details, could you check the two upstream bug reports I linked to and tell us which one seems to be more relevant ?

By the way what are you using gam_server for ? And how are you mounting your ntfs partitions ?

Thanks.

I don`t use gam?server at all.
it is just installed by default to make some trouble to users
and bunc of applications depend on it I think.

Anyway, I am killing thunar and gam_server few times a day
but I am still using My Xubuntu with joy.
There are other file managers like Krusader that you can use in meantime.
ad you can also use One window of thunar.

I am willing to test whatever necessary, so anyone could freely contact me if I can do anzthing to this bug be resolved as fast as possible.

I don`t know about upstream bug reports but I do not think they are related to the problem
with Thunar in (X)Ubuntu.
Main File manager in Xubuntu distribution is useless and it desire
attention and Action!

it Happened again. I opened another window, new window was doing for a half a minute
"something" to HDD not responding and eventually starts to work.
But after closing that window, first window STAYS frozen.

Similar problem does NOT happen with pcmanfm ,for instance,
so this is Thunar BUG.
(I am not sure what is incomplete about this bug anyway)
I use Xubuntu 8.04 amd64 (LTS) and problem is the Same
and if Thunar in this useless state represents (X)Ubuntu LTS(!) Quality Assurance ,
I might well consider going to Debian,Fedora,Suse or some other distribution.

Ouch! I can't tell so much about that bug but markor's words made me a bit angry.

See, this is a GNU/Linux distribution, markor. The people here are responsible for assembling all these pieces of software together in a way it makes sense and runs. They're however not responsible for each and every single line of code someone eles has written in the past. There are 1000 file managers out there -- graphical ones and text baed ones. You simply cant render a whole system useless just because one piece of software doesn't work in your special system configuration.

About the bug I can say that exactly the same freezes occour at times but when performing aribitary operations like showing all previously hidden files or browsing a bit deeper into the directory structure. Second windows were not invilved yet. Killing and restarteing the file manager in a row doesn't help much. Sometimes I have to wait an hour for a sucessfull restart. Often I try to empty the trash in between but this worsens things again. For the lst few days Thunar froze only once. I also disabled all file thumbnails. I also use small fonts and detail views as well as a tree on the left - just a bit like explorer.exe in Microsoft systems (one of the few things I liked about hteir system).

I am sorry if I sounded a bit angry, the point was to move something
inside Xubuntu amd64 community that suffers from this bug from
version 7.10.

I use pcmanfm (currently 0.5) together with Xfce and I like it.
It`s not ideal but I use it for everyday tasks and i like it. Much better then
Thunar with this bug.

If we go back to the field of likes and disklikes, I still have some feeling
that Thunar bug is there to kill Xubuntu user`s positive attitude toward
Xubuntu and that is not Ok, since I choosed Xubuntu for my default OS
for a next few years.

Just FYI I just posted some steps to reproduce a Thunar freeze bug on the XFCE bug database: http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2502

This may or may not be the same bug but the one I describe is certainly present (and bothersome). Hopefully the XFCE folks will finally move on it.

Also I'd like to say that I completely disagree with markor's tone and sweeping accusations of malevolence. I have nothing but gratitude for the literally thousands of programmers who offer their time and talent to make XUbuntu possible. Thanks!

---------------
thunar (0.9.99.1-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian pkg-xfce UNRELEASED (r2643), remaining Ubuntu changes:
    - debian/control:

+ xubuntu-fix-desktop-files.patch: various fixes to desktop files:
. make thunar and thunar-bulk-rename appear under Accessories not System
. make destop-file-validate happy (remove 'Encoding' and 'Application;')
        . add 'OnlyShowIn="XFCE;"' to Thunar-folder-handler.desktop so that
GNOME defaults to Nautilus and not Thunar.
