Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunar

If I start an application by dubbleclicking an icon in thunar, after closing this application it leaves a zombie process. The parent process of this zombie is always 'Thunar --daemon' or - after restarting thunar - just 'thunar'. Sending 'kill -CHLD <PID-of-thunar>' does not help. After restarting thunar all the zombies are gone - as expected. I experience this mostly with gnome applications but sometimes with others too. This behaviour always shows up with totem and eog, often with file-roller and sometimes with others.

As I see know, the problem seems to be known to xfce-/thunar-developers. There is an entry in xfce's bug tracking system:
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2983

While I can't find anything in the latest official thunar changelog, Mandriva seems to have fixed this:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandriva/devel/cooker/x86_64/media/contrib/release/thunar-0.8.0-8mdv2008.0.x86_64.html (second entry in the changelog)

The rpmfind.net link seems to change frequently, so here is the relavant changelog entry from the mandriva package:

* Wed Sep 05 2007 Tomasz Pawel Gajc <email address hidden> 0.8.0-7mdv2008.0
  + Revision: 79434
  - provide patch 0, which prevent zombie process
  - set configure options

Maybe the madriva package maintainer can help to figure out what's going wrong there.

We don't generally operate like that. Is there any particular reason why you
request this?

This patch has only been applied by Mandriva and we still don't know if it's correct, but if Lionel and yourself are OK to apply it...

Well, the patch would be applied and uploaded to Hardy so I'm sure it'll get
testing and what not. Plus, we'll of course pass it upstream for processing.
:) And since Mandravia has a healthy user base and I'm assuming decent dev
policies, I'm just we'll be able to follow through with this smoothly.

Ok, I'm just not very fond of applying patches like that (it's a pain to triage bugs after that) .

Setting to confirmed for thunar (Ubuntu) since the fix was applied upstream and not on our source package. The upstream item should resolve to the correct status shortly.
