Bug Description

Thinkpad model: X200 7454-2GU

Hi,

I installed Kubuntu 8.10 beta. I don't think the tf-tool works with the new thinkpad model, It says "USB device not found". However, the kernel does see the device.

I installed all these packages already via apt-get:
build-essential libtool libusb-dev libpam0g-dev pkg-config thinkfinger-tools libpam-thinkfinger libthinkfinger0

Any idea how to get 'acquire' working?

Thinkfinger is an inappropriately named project, unfortunately. It's goal is to support the fingerprint reader device in older model thinkpads. Unfortunately the hardware seems to have changed. Doubly unfortunate is that the upstream project is done. If your hardware isn't supported by thinkfinger today, it likely never will be.

The good news is this: thinkfinger has closed up to give way to a broader project called "fprint" that can help you. I would suggest you try fprint, but recent discussion on the mailing list makes it clear: aes2810 is not currently supported in Linux, and the reverse engineering effort will be slow.

If you're interested in helping, for the moment I suggest introducing yourself upstream and offering to help.

Thanks for your comments.

Sort of little disappointed after reading your comments. I remember I cant get thinkfinger on T61p working on hardy. very surprised.

Well, it's different hardware underneat that needs new drivers. I imagine the motivation to change was price driven. If you're at all technically inclined I'd highly suggest subscribing to the fprint ML and following up. One or two motivated people with hardware can make a difference, under the right supervision!

I just installed jaunty on an x61t and I am getting this error. I set this same machine up in Hardy, so I know it's not my hardware. It's not clear to me when this stopped working. Just exits immediately with:

~$ sudo tf-tool --acquire --verbose

ThinkFinger 0.3 (http://thinkfinger.sourceforge.net/)

Running in verbose mode.

* Mode: acquire
* Biometric identification record file: '/home/rupa/.thinkfinger.bir'

Initializing... done.
Could not acquire fingerprint (USB error).
