same problem here.
tftpd-hpa broke our PXE installation and when trying to remove or purge I get the very error:
dpkg: error processing package tftpd-hpa (--purge):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1

I did apt-get install --reinstall tftpd-hpa and it installed properly on my Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
But again an
apt-get purge tftpd-hpa failed with:

Removing tftpd-hpa (5.2-7ubuntu3.1) ...
tftpd-hpa stop/waiting
dpkg: error processing package tftpd-hpa (--purge):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1
Processing triggers for man-db (2.6.7.1-1ubuntu1) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 tftpd-hpa
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Looking at other tftp-hpa bugs it appears that a number of issues can come up during uninstall or re-install. As such I am adding this to the server team's backlog to take a look at and investigate. While I have found it is not straightforward to reproduce the quality of bug reports warrants some investigation.

Looks like I forgot to mark the bug as "incomplete" when I asked for the config file in comment #6. Doing that now.
