fails to configure

On Ububtu Intrepid texlive-base-bin fails to configure.

purging tex-common and all packages that depend on it and reinstalling the package I wanted in the first place (pdfjam) does not help.

Apparently there are two problems:

 - the omega part is not installed (broken dependency?)
 - the modes.mf is installed as /etc/texmf/metafont/misc/modes.mf.dpkg-new
