[karmic] Please do not recommend texlive-latex-base-doc

Binary package hint: texlive-base

Currently texlive-latex-base package recommends texlive-latex-base-doc. The doc package is huge (25 MB). I don't see anything in the description of -doc package which says it is enhances the functionality of texlive-latex-base package. Considering that recommends are installed by default, the -doc package should be moved to suggests.

Bug is invalid, this discussion has been done several times.

That we DID split the -doc packages off was already a concession that
is hard on the border line. Most LaTeX/Font package authors require
us to distribute the documentation with the package.

After the change tht recommends are installed by default with agreed
with some authors and internally that we provide -oc packages and
recommend them.

So, no, they will NOT be downgraded to suggests.

YOu can use --without-recommends or put that into apt configuration.

Please someone close this bug.

I agree with OP, and I would like to add that this bug afflicts ALL texlive packages. I have been able to free over 0.5GB of useless texlive documentation corresponding to a small handful of basic texlive packages. Particularly wasteful -doc recommendations include
 * texlive-latex-extra-doc (230 MiB)
 * texlive-base-doc (60 MiB)
 * texlive-pstricks-doc (64 MiB)
 * texlive-latex-recommended-doc (20 MiB)
(other -doc packages probably exist which may be at least as wasteful).

Can you shed some light as to where "this discussion has been done several times"? If we have to deal with all this nonsense, I think we deserve to know why. And thanks for the tip about --without-recommends.
