A short summary:

According to http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23662 this bug is related to using "version 1" package options of siunitx. So the quick fix for affected users is to find and use the corresponding "version 2" options.

The bug was actually caused by a sort of typo in the source code (see also http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=719871 ) which is already fixed upstream: https://github.com/josephwright/siunitx/commit/c8a302439cd18cd014eef8377667f7ab662ba37d

So while there seem to be possible workarounds, we definitely need to have this patch transferred to the current ubuntu packages, as the user should not be forced to edit his tex code that used to work before.
