I attempted to update thru Ubuntu 10.04 automatic update procedure. i have a dual boot Intel machine( ubuntu and Windows 7)

You seem to have a syntax error in your /etc/environment file:

/etc/environment: line 2: $: command not found

You'll need to manually resolve this issue.
