Bug Description

Binary package hint: texlive-fonts-extra

Please add the Tex Gyre (http://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/tex-gyre/) fonts to the the texlive-fonts-extra package. Samples of each font can be font in the Latex Font Catalogue. The CTAN entry for tex-gyre is here: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/tex-gyre.html. The entry states that Tex Gyre is included in Tex Live, but I don't seem to have the fonts installed on my system. Executing "locate texgyre" yields nothing on my Gutsy system, however, I get the following on another system where I manually installed Tex Live:

$ locate texgyre

Isn't it possible to include all fonts from the TExLive DVD in the repo's?

It is fairly unlikely that the Gyre fonts will make it into Gutsy. I don't think they have made it into Debian yet ( http://lists.debian.org/debian-tex-maint/2007/08/msg00221.html ) and I don't think Ubuntu has resources to do it. If Debian gets them soon the perhaps we can try to sync them over. I'm sorry we can't do more for Gutsy, but we are basically just too late in the release cycle for it, in my opinion.

I don't think it's possible to just blindly take all of the TeXLive fonts. Norbert (Debian maintainer and TeXLive developer) might have better insight.

The following "slight" problem has stopped us from till now from
including these fonts in the packages, namely that the fonts are
licensed under the GUST Font License, while the original fonts (URW++
ones) are licensed under GPLv2.

Now, the problem is: (or are)
- who can decide whether this is a derived work or not? If it is it has
  to be licensed under GPLv2
- URW++ will not sue anybody, but this is an assumption, what if?

So my current plan is the following:
- Create separate packages for the tex gyre fonts (already done)
- upload the package to the NEW queue of Debian AND at the same time
inform the ftp-masters about the situation
- wait for their decision.

I don't and will not decide on this, I am not a lawyer. And I guess none
of us is a lawyer to decide whether it is a derived work or independent.

In any case, I am sure that it will NOT do it into gutsy. But the fonts
are not hard to install anyway into TEXMFLOCAL ...

Best wishes

Norbert

Thanks for the feedback Norbert. As you say, the fonts are easy to install, but I prefer to use .deb packages so that my system doesn't get polluted. I've created my own .deb file that installs the fonts in /usr/share/texmf; I was going to inquire about contributing my package to Debian/Ubuntu, but I guess you beat me to it.

The TeX Gyre fonts probably shouldn't go into texlive-fonts-extra, but into a seperate package called texlive-fonts-texgyre or something like that.

Also, where is this temporary package?

They are not present in Debian, but sources are available in my private
repository. We are still waiting for a clarification of the license
chaos.

Isn't Ubuntu much less restrictive than Debian? It seems like they could be put into hardy even if Debian dithers for ages. I mean, there are several "restricted" and "nonfree" packages in Ubuntu.

Till now the license situation is not clear enough that the TeX Gyre
fonts will easily be accepted into Debian.

That will be a bit of a pain, but either the licensing is fixed, or we
have to convince Debian ftp-master, or the fonts will go into non-free
or not packaged at all.

I am speaking for Debian. What Ubuntu does I don't know.

Dear Dr. Preining, Hello Norbert!

First of all, thank you for keeping a debian package ready. While it is not exactly rocket science to add the fonts manually, it is a nicer and cleaner solution to do it "the Debian way".

While we are all patiently waiting for the license issues to be resolved, could you update your .deb package to a newer version? It looks like it has not been touched since October 2007. However, the newest release of the tex-gyre fonts is February 2008.

Cheers

@Norbert: thanks a lot for making the .debs available. I'm having a tiny little problem with the rendering of several of the TeX Gyre fonts. In particular, the letter 'i' doesn't get rendered properly for the following fonts: Adventor, Bonum, Cursor, Heros, Pagella, Schola and Termes (essentially all but Schola). Note that this problem manifests itself only with the OpenType variants -- they render just fine when I use them with LaTeX.

I'm attaching an image to demonstrate the problem (using gnome-specimen).

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with all the latest updates.
