I too am experiencing this on amd64. Though it immediately takes 100% cpu.

Same here. I reported it upstream: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64923

It appears to only occur when I connect to freenode with a password. When connecting to gimpnet the issue does not occur. As soon as I disable the freenode account the problem stops. As soon as I enable it again, even if it's the only account, the problem occurs again.

I took 0.1.16 for a spin, but the issue remains.

A temporary workaround is downgrading to 0.1.12.

You can download it from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-idle. Choose one of the two, depending on your architecture:
- https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/telepathy-idle_0.1.12-1ubuntu0.1_i386.deb

Run the following one by one after downloading on of the above:

sudo apt-get remove telepathy-idle
sudo dpkg -i telepathy-idle_0.1.12-1ubuntu0.1*.deb
sudo apt-get install account-plugin-irc

Run the following to prevent being nagged by updating to 0.1.14 again:

sudo apt-mark hold telepathy-idle

The issue has been fixed upstream in git for 0.1.18. Hopefully it will be released soon so it can be included in 13.10 or can we expect an update for 13.04 as well?

telepathy-idle 0.1.17 has been released and despite the comment in the upstream bug report about the fix being included in 0.1.18, the change log of 0.1.17 includes the fix as a change for this release. What is needed to get the package updated to this new release for Ubuntu?
