Just guessing that my failure is the same. In my case, I have a Likewise-open5-eventlog that has gotten into a "Very Bad State", which I can neither re-install nor purge. That seems to cause 3 cases of dpkg returning an error status to aptitude.

Or, it could be something totally other.
