Bug Description
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open systemsettings
2. Change to multi media pane
3. Click hardware setup
4. Select audio device (internal audio for me)
5. Click "Front left" or "Front right" to test speaker/output
Expected:
The test sounds are played
What is actually happening:
No sound is put out; stdout shows a PCM error.
Amarok and others can output sound via pulseaudio
This is the console output of systemsettings with the last three lines being the output a click on any of the test buttons gives:

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.
Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of- standard- support on April 29, 2021.
Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported when using a currently supported release of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you do otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.
By the way, I do hear 'Front left' and 'Front right' sounds in Kubuntu 24.04 although the steps to reproduce have changed a little since the xenial release.
