Bug Description

On server boot, I see the initial screen asking to select language and other options. Then when I select the option to install, I get nothing but a black screen. Taking "quiet" out of the boot args has no effect on this.

The image from 20130527 boots fine, but 20130528 does not.
This happens on both i386 and amd64.
I've not tested on hardware yet, but I've tried this on both virtualbox and kvm, which both fail to boot.

The changes since yesterday's image are few:
-gcc-4.8-base:amd64 4.8.0-7ubuntu1
+gcc-4.8-base:amd64 4.8.0-8ubuntu1
-libgcc1:amd64 1:4.8.0-7ubuntu1
+libgcc1:amd64 1:4.8.0-8ubuntu1
-libplymouth2:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1
+libplymouth2:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu7
-libstdc++6:amd64 4.8.0-7ubuntu1
+libstdc++6:amd64 4.8.0-8ubuntu1
-plymouth 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1
+plymouth 0.8.8-0ubuntu7

Of those, plymouth seems to be the most likely culprit.

This is also reproducible on hardware

plymouth cannot possibly be responsible; it doesn't run in server image startup.

The more relevant change is that we had a new debian-installer build, rolling up several changes elsewhere. This doesn't really help narrow things down much, though, so I'm just going to investigate directly.

This sounds like the start-udev bugs that were fixed in

systemd (202-0ubuntu9) saucy; urgency=low

  * debian/udev-udeb.links: Add /sbin/udevadm backwards compat symlink, too.
  * debian/extra/udev.startup: Mount devtmpfs, not tmpfs with the manual
    make_extra_nodes().
  * debian/extra/udev.startup: Mount devpts.
  * debian/extra/udev.startup: Drop obsolete "scsi_wait_scan" modprobing.

Can we please re-test with that version? Thanks!

For the record, this needs another d-i rebuild to actually get picked up.

I've confirmed that 20101020ubuntu238 works.

debian-installer (20101020ubuntu238) saucy; urgency=low

  * No-change rebuild against new udev.
