Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Package: system-config-printer 1.0.5 or CUPS 1.3.7

After setting up an IPP printer using system-config-printer, I now want to reconfigure the printer to point to a different URI or change its name. However, going to printer properties, the device URI change button is disabled and I cannot type in the text box. I am a member of lpadmin and I ran system-config-printer with sudo.

I also cannot delete the printer. This happens for all IPP printers I have configured.

My computer is 192.168.0.4, the print server is 192.168.0.5. Configuring CUPS through the web interface, http://localhost:631, I try to modify the printer, and the browser redirects to the CUPS page of the printer host (192.168.0.5) and I get a 403 forbidden. I also cannot delete the printer through the CUPS web interface.

Thus, I am stuck with a misconfigured printer and no way to delete it.

I can confirm this bug on a fresh 9.04 install.

I installed cups-pdf and it was working fine. Then I installed my IPP printer, located at HOSTNAME. The printer does not work and now there are no other printing options (i.e. cups-pdf no longer appears on my list of printers). I tried to delete the printer, and everytime I do, a dialog pops up requesting "Password for [HOSTNAME]" As it is a networked printer, I don't understand why it is asking for my server password to delete it from the client. In any event, the password does not work.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious. This printer worked fine in 8.04.

This is actually still an issue on lucid.

I cannot reproduce this problem. For me it is no probalem to remove IPP printers which point to CUPS queues on remote servers using system-config-printer on Lucid.

Are you logged in as the primary user (or any user in the "lpadmin" group) when you are trying to remove the printer?

I'm using 10.04 with GNOME, starting system-config-printer from the command line using sudo and the selections for Delete, Rename, Enable, Share, and Create Class are all greyed out. I moved this printer to another host, so the IP address in invalid now, and I would simply like to remove it and re-configure the printer.

Not sure if this helps: Printers in my network that are connected via USB or Samba protocol can apparently be deleted, or have their properties edited. Printers using ipp protocol cannot, even if they have been taken off line. Right-click menu options are greyed out, and the "change" buttons in the property dialog boxes are greyed out too. Logging in under sudo doesn't seem to have any effect.

Found a workaround! I used the CUPS http interface:

"http://[ip address of host with printer to delete or modify]:631/printers/?" l needed my username and password for the host. (I can see all the printers available on my network, using http://localhost:631/printers/?)

I selected the printer I had taken offline and chose "delete" under the Administration drop-down menu on the printer-specific page that came up.

It is now gone from my system-config-printer GUI.
