If a network printer is inaccessible in a way such that dns doesn't fail and the connection isn't refused, system-config-printer hangs for several minutes while starting up or modifying that printer.

For example, if a laptop user has a printer ipp://192.168.1.123, but then tries to use the laptop on another network, system-config-printer will hang while starting up. Similarly, using something like ipp://example.com where example.com isn't actually reachable but does resolve can result in the same behaviour.

This is not a duplicate of bug #165197.

I have the same problem here, I have a remote printer (which is plugged on my desktop pc) configured on my laptop pc, and when I am at work (with my laptop), when I click on "print" in gedit for example, when I am not connected, it "freezes" until I get a connection...

This problem still exists in 8.10.

My work has a cups server, and my /etc/cups/client.conf points to this server by ip.

When that ip is not available (ie not on the work network) cups hangs for roughly 5 minutes. This seems to affect any program that uses cups (including wine, which will hang for roughly 5 minutes before it starts any program).
