Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Brand new install (complete reformat) of Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) from CD on Asus M51S. - fully up-to-date as with

Added new printer through System Settings > Printer Configuration > New network printer > (automatically found it). Printer is Toshiba eStudio 280, FWIW. Could print (with a few wobbles) using Jaunty on this same laptop.

Printing any PDF (that I've tried - from several sources) results in apparently no error, no output. Tried from Acrobat Reader inside Firefox, Konqueror, separate Acroread, separator Okular, all do nothing except write to..

 /var/log/cups/access_log:
localhost - - [03/Nov/2009:10:05:57 +1300] "POST /printers/Bigprint_(csl) HTTP/1.1" 200 462 Create-Job client-error-bad-request

and /var/log/cups/error_log:
E [03/Nov/2009:10:05:57 +1300] Returning IPP client-error-bad-request for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/Bigprint_(csl)) from localhost

Printing test page from System Settings / Printer configuration works; printing from OpenOffice works.

All software installed from Ubuntu sources (except VirtualBox, but that's not relevant) Packages: cups 1.4.1-5ubuntu2 ; konqueror 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu3 ; acroread 9.2-1karmic1 ; okular 9.2-1karmic1

uname -a: Linux haven 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
lsb_release -a: No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
Codename: karmic

Don't take this as confirmation that it is fixed, but I just managed to print a PDF from Konqueror. Adobe Reader 9.2 still can't print but with different results, given the general bad rep this version seems to have on any platform (not just KDE) I wouldn't blame cups for this.
CUPS has presumably been upgraded now 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1, Other software seems to be same version. okular 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu1
I'll try and print PDFs from konq for a while (being doing this from windows vm recently)

As of today, printing PDF from Okular doesn't work.

I also have this issue with Okular and Evice on Karmic. Adobe works ok but I'm not willing to keep it installed on my machine for anything other than testing so I would be more than happy to provide any information that would be of use. Just let me know what info you want.

Just to confirm, same issue on 10.10 Maverick Kubuntu. Printing a PDF from Okular results in:

E [27/Nov/2010:10:43:25 +1100] Returning IPP client-error-bad-request for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/FS-1010) from localhost

Trying to print from the command line results in:

$ lpr /tmp/BelowTheLine.pdf
lpr: Bad job-sheets value ""!

This is because the tool to add printers has added the line:

JobSheets

to the configuration in /etc/cups/printers.conf when it should be:

JobSheets none none

Fixing that and doing "stop cups && start cups" means I can print PDF's again.

I'm not sure if this is a CUPS problem or a KDE issue, my guess is that KDE simply tells CUPS what to create and CUPS itself is writing the printer config.

This *may* be a KDE bug, I just added the same printer via the CUPS web interface http://localhost:631/ and found that it worked correctly.

For me it looks like a KDE bug, too. I use the GNOME desktop and system-config-printer and never had such problems. Also the KDE application digikam prints correctly in this environment.

Can someone check whether the printer setup tool of KDE produces print queues with broken JobSheets entry?

Changed in cups (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
affects: cups (Ubuntu) → kdebase (Ubuntu)

Seems to be system-config-printer-kde which produces print queues with broken JobSheets entry, there is no problem via the CUPS web interface.
System Settings > Printer Configuration or kcmshell4 system-config-printer-kde shows no items in the Starting/Ending Banner Settings dropdown boxes under the printer's Policies.

affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) → system-config-printer-kde (Ubuntu)
