Bug Description

I clicked on the new System Cleaner that comes with ubuntu release candidate 8.10. By default, all the deb packages are selected so I assumed that those packages were no longer needed since it says on top that the cleaner should be used to clean out the "cruft". I then clicked to proceed and it took a long long time, longer than the installation procedure (install from CDROM burnt from ISO). When I minimized the system cleaner dialog , it totally dissappeared from the screen (not even on the task bar). Used alt tab to bring it back on . Thats not the main issue. I slowly noticed that one by one, all the menu options dissappeared. Finally the wallpaper dissappeared, panel dissappeared ... everything and the system hanged. Only thing left was the brown colored desktop. I rebooted and after the grub screen , it totally hung. (messages said this or that were missing or something). ehmm... was it meant to be a pre official release joke.. like in "system cleaner" means clean out the entire system?

erwinsoo, unfortunately I cannot reproduce this. I just installed Ubuntu intrepid RC version in a fresh virtual machine, and started System Cleaner. It did not find any cruft at all, no packages listed in the user interface. I think something else went badly wrong in your system.

You're right that the program should make it clearer to the user that they may be doing something bad. I'll see what I can do about that.

dont know if this provides a clue. Create a USB startup disk, system cleaner on the menus both have a simple rectangle icon.

Also my installation was on a desktop machine. WIndows partitions totally removed and replaced by linux partitions. Entire hdd used and formatted during installation. I downloaded the ISO from a mirror in taiwan (do mirrored files get infected by virii?)

Anyway, I will download the final release and check on it again.
