Bug Description

Binary package hint: gfxboot

I used usb-creator-kde to put kubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-amd64.iso on a USB flash drive, and rebooted.

A screen appeared with a language choice, then a menu with options to Install Kubuntu, Try Kubuntu, ...
I used the keyboard to select the "Try Kubuntu without changes" option but there was no feedback. I thought perhaps I hadn't selected this or perhaps I had to choose some of the F3-F4-F6 options at the bottom, but they didn't work. My computer was unresponsive for about 40 seconds until a different splash screen appeared and the live Kubuntu desktop appeared.

Assuming my computer (AMD Athlon 3000+, 1GB RAM) wasn't at fault for the apparent hang, I think there should be some feedback to indicate you've chosen the "Try Kubuntu" option. E.g. clear the menu screen and display "Initializing Try Ubuntu mode...".

This is possibly a duplicate of bug LP #131160 ("lack of immediate feedback when return pressed on cd boot menu") from Gutsy. Maybe this bug belongs in a different package such as ubiquity or gfxboot-theme-ubuntu? LP #540895 for ubiquity has the package comment "Provide visual feedback for clicking "Try Ubuntu" in the form of a spinning cursor.", so maybe this has been addressed!

Likewise, there's no feedback for about 25 seconds if I choose "Check disc for errors" from the boot menu.

The screen should have been cleared by syslinux on exit from gfxboot, which should have been almost immediately after you pressed Enter and quite a while before the system got round to displaying the splash screen. I don't know why this didn't happen in your case.

ubiquity cannot be involved here - none of its code runs until quite a bit later, and the changelog entry you found is referring to a different bit of user interface.

affects: gfxboot (Ubuntu) → syslinux (Ubuntu)

The screen definitely doesn't clear after I make those menu choices, I've reproduced four times.
How can I help debug? Where is information about debugging boot/syslinux/gfxboot, (e.g. is there a Ctrl-L to redisplay, or a log)?

It's a Falcon Northwest PC: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, K8V deluxe motherboard with VIA chipset and AMI BIOS, ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro graphics (R350 chip).

The problem remains with 10.04 final, I made a live USB of kubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-amd64.iso
"The screen should have been cleared by syslinux on exit from gfxboot"
but it just stays there for 30 seconds or so after pressing [Enter] on "Try kubuntu"
