Bug Description

Hi,

for ages I am using a network PXE server and a script to configure the PXE server for every ubuntu version I am using, both the AMD64 and i386 code. For all releases my PXE server is configured the very same way, using the same script to download netboot and image from ubuntu. Worked well for ages.

Now I have a brendnew Asrock BeeBox N3150, and to install it I was trying to step from 14.04 to 15.10 beta 1.

But both AMD64 and i386 netboot codes for 15.10 beta 1 are not working. BIOS boot code says FTP BOOT: ... pxelinux.0 and shows a single dot and then completely hangs.

It, on the other hand, perfectly works with the 14.04 boot code.

The pxelinux.0 coming with the netboot differs i nsize:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26720 Apr 15 2014 14.04-amd64/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26720 Apr 15 2014 14.04-i386/ubuntu-installer/i386/pxelinux.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 42934 Jul 29 01:35 15.10-amd64/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 42934 Jul 29 01:36 15.10-i386/ubuntu-installer/i386/pxelinux.0

So it looks as if the pxelinux.0 is somewhat broken in 15.10 beta1

regards
Hadmut

Replacing the pxelinux.0 of 15.10 beta1 with the pxelinux.0 from 14.04 solves the problem of freezing, but then goes into boot: prompt after loading the config, since this versions config file contains config syntax the old code can't deal with.

So it's definitely the pxelinux.0 causing the freeze.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

OK, I had a similar problem with the latest version, but solved the problem:

the 15.10 netboot's pxelinux.0 can't be tftp-served from a 14.04-server, because it can't deal with the old pxechain.com.

To chainload the new code,

pxechn.c32 ldlinux.c32 libcom32.c32 libutil.c32 vesamenu.c32

must be available from tftp, but are not available under 14.04.

So the boot server itself must be a 15.10, or these bootfiles must be manually installed.
